Visualize Magnetic Field on Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Magnetic Field Viewer for disc Sarmaium Cobalt Magnets
Magnetic Field Pattern for Multiple Samarium Cobalt Disc Magnets

Did you know that you can easily view stationary magnetic fields of any permanent magnet material, i.e. Samarium Cobalt magnets, Neodymium magnets or Ceramic magnets? You can purchase flat magnetic field viewer films which can be used over and over again. The green translucent thin flexible sheets have micro-encapsulated colloidal Nickel and remain suspended inside the jellylike membranes to expose magnetized material.

  • When the viewer is placed on a DC magnetic field of rare-earth Samarium Cobalt magnets, the enclosed particles would align in the same directions as the flux lines coming from the magnet source.
  • Along the magnetic field lines, the Nickel particles would clump and result in darker green to visually present the precise 2-D image of the magnetic pole location and direction for a single or multiple permanent magnets. To see the magnetization patter, the film is darker along the field lines are perpendicular the magnet surface, and lighter for horizontal field lines.
  • Since the colloidal Nickel particles can move around inside their gelatinous membranes without any restrictions, the pattern can be easily deleted and re-established once the magnetic source is removed and replaced with another.
  • The particles are so tiny that the magnetic field film can distinguish fields as low as only a few Gauss and still present a vivid image.
  • The flexibility characteristics of these films is ideal to detect magnetic fields on magnet materials with concave and convex surfaces.
  • They can be purchased in many shopping outlets and can be cut to smaller sizes if needed, especially when accessibility is limited. Their properties remain consistent after they are cut.
These films are perfect tools for educational purposes. We sometimes use them to differentiate multipole Ceramic magnets from conventionally magnetized ones. Contact us for more Neodymium, Ceramic or Samarium Cobalt magnets technical support.
