Rare earth Samarium Cobalt magnets are made in sintering process and are often selected as magnet materials in many applications due to its powerful magnetic force and outstanding resistance to corrosion and demagnetization. Although our permanent magnets are manufactured according to the Magnetic Materials Producer Association standards meeting their physical and magnetic requirements, fine chips on the edges are often inevitable as they are extremely brittle in nature. Because of this character, we or any other samarium cobalt magnets suppliers cannot custom-make certain shapes with center holes, round edges, long thin rectangles, sharp angled corners, etc. Some shapes would not survive even before reach to the hands of the end-users.

Like all other magnetic products, air gap between samarium cobalt magnets and the contact surface of metal is critical for meeting their maximum rated pull force. Any dust, unevenness, oil, paint or rust can increase the air gaps as the magnetic field is unable to penetrate into the ferrous load. It is important to understand the conditions that would negatively affect the permanent magnetism, overcome when implementing them in your design application, and minimize any physical damage. Besides their fragileness and contact surfaces between magnets and parts, consider the working temperature, surrounding magnetic field created by other parts, part thickness, carbon content in the ferrous material, magnetization orientation, required magnetic power, and dimension tolerance.

Once these factors have any temporary or irreversible damages on the magnets, the functionality of your application would fail leading to possible personal injuries and/or equipment damage. We highly recommend our customers to test run their application before purchasing large quantities if they are unfamiliar with the magnets.
